Wuthering Heights
There was a news story saying that the extinct dire wolf had been brought back to life. I started wondering—if that’s possible, does that mean no one ever has to die anymore? And what if a ghost survives and possesses a body—wouldn’t that make someone practically immortal? It’s kind of incredible to think about. But then again, for that to happen, you’d have to definitely become a ghost, and then learn how to possess someone afterward—so maybe the road to immortality is still pretty far off. Haha.
Just like how identical twins can prove that even if your body is made from the same genes, your personality, the environment you grow up in, and your sensitivity all change your face and body over time—so you never become exactly the same person. I think if mammoths or dinosaurs were revived, the way we look at environmental issues would probably change entirely, too.
Ever since I started using the medium necks, I had this admiration for Kate Bush’s cartwheel, and I always wanted to join that Wuthering Heights Day—where everyone wears red dresses, rose hairpieces, and black belts, and gathers somewhere to dance. But somewhere along the line, I forgot about it. These days, there are so many dance tutorials out there, so I’ve been thinking I should set aside some time to practice before I forget again.
Wuthering Heights is so famous that the image of it always came first, and I kept putting off actually reading it. The other day, I found a Balthus art book being sold like it was discarded, and I picked it up—while reading, I learned that Balthus was deeply moved by Wuthering Heights and made 14 illustrations for it. That convinced me it really must be a terrifying work. I’d been slowly trying to get through the original version but couldn’t make much progress—so I decided to start with the 1939 film version. All the actors had such unpleasant expressions, it was startling—but despite that, I got totally drawn in and ended up crying my eyes out.
After that, I felt like I could read it in Japanese—and once I started, I devoured it. The part where I thought it was a cat but it turned out to be a rabbit corpse… and that famous line… it was like, “Please add dakuten to A otherwise any letter!” and I absolutely loved it.
It really captured something like the root of the sickness that still plagues our world today. The way social structures are created to oppress and “shape” people—something that can’t be healed with simple human comfort. There are lots of complaints from the characters too, so it does get a bit tiring. But when someone’s been emotionally abused, they can’t say anything but complaints, and people start to disappear from their life. Even though Heathcliff spreads poison, he can’t hide his human beauty—that must be why he’s so deeply loved.
It felt like the book really grasped the core of the world’s illness. And even though the question of “so what do we do now?” still hangs in the air, I was left with a strong sense that Emily Brontë was affirming her own existence, and that gave me a deep felling of happiness..
In the movie coming out next year, Margot Robbie will play the main character, and Nate (from Euphoria—that plagiarism scandal was awful too) is supposed to play Heathcliff.
